In this second part, we conclude our list of the top 10 most interesting facts about mold.
5. Mold can cause over 30 different health symptoms
Mold is responsible for everything from depression, to sinus infection, to skin rashes, to gastrointestinal problems. There are many different molds and they can attack people as allergens, pathogens, or toxins depending on the species. Usually, when no other obvious cause is found, negative health effects are attributed to mold.
4. Mold affects people differently.
The trickiest thing about mold is that different molds in different amounts affect different people in different medical states differently. That’s a lot of variables to consider. For this reason, the EPA has not defined any set standards or limits on how much mold is acceptable. Some mold may not affect building occupants at all but when a new family moves in or a new employee joins the office, it can be disastrous.
3. Infants born during mold season are three times more likely to develop asthma
Although asthma cannot be diagnosed within the first two years, babies tend to exhibit wheezing, a precursor to asthma if they are born during mold season. They are then shown to be three times more likely to develop asthma. Mold season is different depending on the region.
2. Mold destroys more wood each year than all the fires, floods, and termites combined.
White rot, soft rot, and the especially destructive brown rot mold, Poria incrassate, is responsible for decaying lumber and wood used in building construction. In fact, more than 5% of all construction lumber manufactured in the UnitedStatues is used to replace wood that has been decayed by mold.
1. New enzyme compounds makes mold easily controllable
Enzyme based remediation is a breakthrough new technology that uses organic, naturally-occurring enzymes to seek out and eat mold. What makes our enzyme so special is that it is completely safe for humans and animals and works faster than other remediation methods, and with less deconstruction. Its own hype may work against it, as it is still trying to get over the “too good to be true” stigma. But it’s only a matter of time before the enzyme becomes the only remediation method used to eliminate mold.
The use of enzymes is still rather exclusively limited to certain remediators so ask your remediator if they use enzymes.
