July 28, 2010

Ebony joins the ranks of many others who have had permanent damage as a result of failed remediation of mold. Water Hose Replacement Tips

Finding and Repairing Chimney Leaks

January 15, 2010

Improper or worn flashing around a chimney along the roof is the most common source for leaks. A hairline crack above the flashing will allow a vast amount of water to pour into your home during heavy rains. Flashing can be worn, or corroded over time. Flashing should not just be glued to the brick, there should be a stepped flash or counterflash slipped into a one inch slot. Whatever you do, do not use caulk to repair flashings and instead use a high pressure polyurethane sealant. You can test the resistance of your flashing by running a low pressure hose around the chimney to roof intersection and see if any water comes inside.

The school seems to have reacted to the complaints by paying for minor cosmetic repairs, draining the school’s funds without addressing the underlying problems. Complaints were made that leaks in the ceiling were making the ceiling tiles moldy. The school responded by replacing the tiles without repairing the leak. This is an incredibly poor decision and I hope it is not exemplary of the typical decisions made at Charleston.

When a Building is Functioning Correctly It Will Not Have Mold

August 13, 2009

Serious mold growth only occurs when there is a lot of water. Correct building design allows for a normal amount of water vapor to ventilate through the building and escape outside. So the only reason mold should exist is if there is an abnormally high amount of water or the building is not doing its job.
