Oak Ridge Elementary Finally Reopens After Exhaustive IAQ Battle

Someone could make a documentary about this story, but to sum things up – students and teachers at the school were becoming sick, fingers were pointed at mold and moisture issues, the school spent thousands on testing but could not find a definitive link to mold, eventually the school was shut down. After so many months having to split students among nearby schools, parents were eager to finally send their kids back to Oak Ridge.

College Struggles for Mold Solutions

The school seems to have reacted to the complaints by paying for minor cosmetic repairs, draining the school’s funds without addressing the underlying problems. Complaints were made that leaks in the ceiling were making the ceiling tiles moldy. The school responded by replacing the tiles without repairing the leak. This is an incredibly poor decision and I hope it is not exemplary of the typical decisions made at Charleston.

Wet Vacuums – Wet vacs are like ordinary vacuum cleaners but they are designed to suck up liquids, which would damage dry vacuum cleaners. Wet vacuums are a great tool for removing water from a damp surface quickly before mold can form. Allowing spills to dry on their own only evaporates the water into the air where it is still a problem. But a wet vac traps the water inside an internal canister until you can dump it outside. Should You Buy a Moldy Home?

When buying a property, you want to discover the history of that property in terms of mold growth and water leaks. Sellers are required to disclose any past incidents with mold, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. If there was mold growth in the past, find out what caused it in order to determine if there is an ongoing moisture problem in the home. If it was caused by a flooding disaster, then that isn’t the home’s fault. But if mold is the result of unrepaired water leaks, then take that into consideration.
