Brick is like a moisture reservoir, absorbing rainwater and holding it within its internal pore structure. When this water dries it turns into water vapor that will migrate either back outside or to the interior cavity depending on a process called vapor diffusion. Vapor diffusion says that water vapor will travel from an area of high concentration of water vapor to an area of low concentration and that it will also travel from a warm surface to a cold surface.
