Meat Substitute Made From Mold May Not Be As Good As It Sounds

Quorn is made primarily from Fusarium venenatum and grown in large fermentation vats. Although the label claims the meat substitute is “mushroom in origin,” Fusarium is not a mushroom, but a fungus. The species was discovered as early as the 1960s in a British dirt sample. In 2002, Quorn started growing it in large fermentation vats and using it as a meat substitute.
