Stachybotrys in History

In the 1930s, S. chartarum became notorious in Russia and Eastern Europe where it killed thousands of horses. Horses exhibited symptoms such as irritation of the mouth, throat, and nose; shock; dermal necrosis; a decrease in leukocytes; hemorrhage; nervous disorder; and death. It wasn’t until 1938 when Russian scientists determined the deaths were caused by S. chartarum.
