Mold Conspiracy in California

When James Marmon started working in the building in 2007, he noticed red Xs on the floor mats. Only weeks later did he find out why. Mr. Marmon had stepped into a moldy office that was causing employees a range of symptoms from extreme fatigue to nosebleeds. There were rumblings of inspections and investigations into the air quality, but not enough action was taken. Several other employees have complained with respiratory concerns and filed workers’ compensation claims with the union.

Alarming Hospital Mold

The rooms are apparently in an older section of the hospital and covered with a kind of wallpaper that can trap moisture and condensation. This wallpaper was a construction standard in the 1990s but has proved to be a sponge for water and thus cause mold. It is likely that some water intruded through the windows in these rooms and was absorbed into the wallpaper. After the drywall is replaced, the hospital plans to paint instead of use wallpaper as it does in newer sections of the hospital. It seems the hospital will simply remove the moldy material rather than seek assistance from a commercial mold remediator.

Guardian Preservation Services Featured on PBS Mold Removal Special

Guardian Preservation Services was recently featured on the PBS “For Your Home” special on mold removal. The episode centers on a 200-year-old log cabin that was moved to the top of a mountain. The cabin recently suffered winter damage including frozen pipes and a leaky roof that allowed water to intrude, causing indoor mold growth over time. Guardian explained the dangers of mold on health and property, as well as proper and efficient mold removal methods.

Easley School Takes Mold Remediation Seriously

The school district isn’t springing for a commercial mold remediation company, but taking on the job themselves by vacuuming all surfaces with a HEPA vacuum, wiping all surfaces with an antimicrobial cleaner, and spraying with an antimicrobial disinfectant. They plan on removing moldy tiles and giving that HVAC system a thorough cleaning.

Even Arizona has Moldy Schools

Here, the school did the test based on a recommendation from the maintenance crew. The kind of mold found is not even the most dangerous. It is usually found on old bread and potatoes. It’s mostly harmless unless someone is immunosuppressed – which is probable given the age of the students. The report did not seem to mention Stachybotrys or other kinds of black mold. Still, the school decided it was unsafe and took responsible action by sealing off a section of the school and informing parents of the situation.

Oak Ridge Elementary Finally Reopens After Exhaustive IAQ Battle

Someone could make a documentary about this story, but to sum things up – students and teachers at the school were becoming sick, fingers were pointed at mold and moisture issues, the school spent thousands on testing but could not find a definitive link to mold, eventually the school was shut down. After so many months having to split students among nearby schools, parents were eager to finally send their kids back to Oak Ridge.
