We have often heard stories about apartments, houses, and office buildings being evacuated due to dangerous mold growth. But now a prison in Nevada has had to close its barred-doors and relocate its prisoners to separate jails because of mold growth.
Mold was discovered on January 7 during a routine health inspection at the jail. It was likely caused by a simple leak from the laundry machine. Now all the male and female inmates of the Pahrump jail have been shipped to new locations while repairs are made and the mold is removed.
Even though the mold has not been identified as dangerous, and no complaints have been made, the Pahrump jail decided to play it safe by temporarily moving the prisoners.
It will cost Pahrump about $10,000 just to transport its 28 to 50 inmates to their new grey bar hotels.
So what will happen when new arrests are made?
“We’re still arresting those who are a threat to the public safety,” says Sheriff Tony Demeo, “But other persons who have committed misdemeanor crimes without an immediate threat to public safety because of the type of crime are being cited and released.”
That’s right. Because of mold, if you break the law in Pahrump you will be given a get out of jail free card, just as long as you are not an immediate threat to public safety.
This isn’t the first time mold has impeded justice in Pahrump. From 2001 to 2002, the entire courthouse was closed due to mold.
