After hearing President Obama’s speech about cutting the cost of Iraq last night, I thought about some information I read when the US started looking for the first WMD and how biological weapons are devestating.
If there is any doubt remaining that mold is seriously unhealthy, then look no further than the thousands of victims of biological warfare in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Kenya, and Iraq – just to name a few. These biological weapons were created from the natural mycotoxins produced from various mold species; the same species of mold that can ordinarily grow in houses and schools. How alarming is it to know that your own home may be the site of detonation for a biological weapon sent from Mother Nature?
But don’t panic – it’s probably not that dire. These biological weapons use an extreme concentration of mycotoxins to cause immediate and devastating effects on the immune system, nervous system, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, and skin. These weapons can cause leukemia and liver, kidney, lung and esophagus cancer.
Mycotoxins are natural weapons. Molds release them to kill other molds and organisms that encroach upon their territory as a survival mechanism. Mycotoxins are meant to kill the competition, but they affect humans and animals as well. The mycotoxins produced by Stachybotrys, or black mold, for example, are coincidentally deadly to horses and poultry. Mycotoxins are designed by nature to harm and should be avoided by all living things.
The most prominent mycotoxins used in biological weapons are Aflatoxins and T-2 Trichothecene. Aflatoxins are produced by various species of Aspergillus mold which grows in hot, arid regions on corn, nuts, and hay. T-2 Trichothecene can slow down the production of protein and nucleic acid in the body and was used in Southeast Asia where it was called “yellow rain” due to its yellow fluid.
Even though it’s unlikely that mold will naturally grow in concentrated levels equal to a biological weapon, it is still worth noting that the concentration level is the only difference between biological weapons and mycotoxins produced in your household molds. The difference is that biological weapons-grade mycotoxin concentration will kill quickly, and household mold can make you sick over time.
Since concentration is so important to determine the deadlyness of mold, why is it that most mold remediation companies don’t take samples? Don’t you want to know what your dealing with? At Guardian we always take samples, before and after the remediation process, and perform a moisture assessment to ensure the mold is gone. If it isn’t gone we will continue to remediate until it is at no cost to the customer. Once it is gone, we give a lifetime gurantee. You cannot give that type of gurantee without knowing what concentration levels you are dealing with!
How do other mold remediation companies get away with saying the mold is gone just because the visible mold is gone?
