We were just officially certified as a Service Magic certified company. We have had a solid track record with our customers and this has helped prove it as only mold remediators that always get 4 or more stars out of 5 from customer feedback become service magic certified. Well, as part of the certification process, Service magic asked us if we were doing anything “green”. Of course, we are! We are one of the few companies that is environmentally conscious in that we use all natural enzymes to kill mold.
As service magic has found out, the green movement is not just about environmental protection, it is a powerful marketing phenomenon. Bleach, and chemical-based cleaners are out, while eco-friendly green products are in. For mold removal, the naturally-occurring, organic enzyme has made it a popular choice for the environmentally-wary, and now many former mold removal chemicals have followed suit. The mold cleaner market is now oversaturated with so-called “green” cleaners.
The word “chemical” has been loaded with negative images of billowing smokestacks and industrial waste. While the word “green” now conjures up images of flowers, trees, fresh air, and lots of sunshine. Companies have seen the power of these words and their marketing departments have busily rebranded their products with new adjectives like “green”, “natural”, and “environmentally safe”.
These words have been overused so much that they have now lost most of their original meaning. What exactly classifies as a “green” or “natural” product? After all, mold is 100% natural but it can also be toxic at the same time. It’s easy to slap the words “natural,” “green,” “nontoxic,” or any kind of “friendly” (e.g. “eco-friendly,” “ozone friendly”) on a product. Using these words is not regulated, and they are not based so much on fact, but more on opinion of the definition of those words.
In fact, the Federal Trade Commission warns against purchasing products that have vague terms and sweeping claims in their advertising. Instead, look for a more concrete term like “organic.” The enzyme we use is one of the only organic mold removal products available that is certified by the US government. Also, check to make sure that a “green” cleaning product actually has the Green Seal (or EcoLogo in Canada). This certification is given by the federal government and while not perfect, it shows some testing was done to give the product certification.
Going green means more than taking the assertions on products at face value. Investigate claims. Go to the company website and request documentation to back up their “green” claims.
If you want to get rid of mold naturally, give us a call at Guardian Preservation Services. We are a mold removal company that uses enzymes to eliminate mold. This naturally-occurring organic enzyme is EPA certified with no toxic components, and is entirely safe for humans and animals.
