Bricks and Mold

November 23, 2009

Brick is like a moisture reservoir, absorbing rainwater and holding it within its internal pore structure. When this water dries it turns into water vapor that will migrate either back outside or to the interior cavity depending on a process called vapor diffusion. Vapor diffusion says that water vapor will travel from an area of high concentration of water vapor to an area of low concentration and that it will also travel from a warm surface to a cold surface.

Healthcare Reform and Mold

November 12, 2009

The proposed HVAC inspection would be similar to how electrical inspections are handled and be fee-based, not costing the tax payers anything. What is surprising is that many HVAC contractors support the idea. They say inspections are needed for safety and to cut down on the number of unlicensed contractors. The Delmarva Master HVAC Association has written a letter to the council in support of required inspections.

Pipe Leak Destroys Brand New $174 Million Hotel

November 6, 2009

In fact, the mold which has jeopardized the value of the $174 million building could have originated from a single leaking pipe on the roof. The pipe leads to the air conditioning unit where it could have spread water and volatile organic compounds throughout the convention center. This one leak could have caused the mold in several rooms and on multiple floors. A third party mold remediator confirmed the mold in the footage was “extensive,” noting, “It is pretty severe.”

College Struggles for Mold Solutions

November 3, 2009

The school seems to have reacted to the complaints by paying for minor cosmetic repairs, draining the school’s funds without addressing the underlying problems. Complaints were made that leaks in the ceiling were making the ceiling tiles moldy. The school responded by replacing the tiles without repairing the leak. This is an incredibly poor decision and I hope it is not exemplary of the typical decisions made at Charleston.
