FEMA Thinks Twice About Moldy Mobile Homes

Toxic mold has already been found on many of the trailers FEMA previously provided for Hurricane Katrina victims. Although the trailers were only meant to provide temporary housing, by June 2008 many occupants reported black mold forming on their new homes. This is likely due to a combination of cheap building materials as well as the humidity of the Gulf Coast. Organic building materials are used more frequently in homes today because they are cheaper, but they provide sustenance to mold.

Beware a Moldy Mattress

For us regular folk, the best thing to do with a moldy mattress is to throw it out if it has more than just a little mold on it. It can be hard for people to ditch an expensive mattresses, but there really is no way to salvage a mattress if you can see mold on over half of it. Sorry.

They may even show you how the sample showed a little residual mold to build up their case. A little mold is normal, and outdoor spore levels may be high anyway. Homes cannot be sanitized, sterilized, and 100 percent mold free all the time.

White rot causes wood to shrink and feel spongy, making it weak. It is hard to notice because it does not show cracks, but if you see wood starting to bend then you know you have a problem.
