Buyer Beware

May 29, 2009

The Thalers sued the Zovkos for fraud and misrepresentation. Fraud is intentional deception for personal gain. But the Zovkos did not intentionally deceive the Thalers because they were not aware of the problems. They did not purposefully misrepresent the problems the house had. It hearkens back to the old saying, “It’s not a lie if you believe it.” Everything the Zovkos knew about the house, the Thalers also knew.

Mold Kills Three Children at Hospital

May 26, 2009

Renovation work was being done on the children’s wing of the hospital where the victims were staying. Parents expressed concern over fumes and odors that seeped into their children’s rooms from the work and that workers often shared the same passageways that their children used when they were transported. The impending lawsuit says the hospital did not take necessary precautions to ensure the children were not exposed to the air pollutants caused by the renovation.

Do Vent-Free Gas Appliances Cause Mold Growth?

May 23, 2009

A study created by the Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance of the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association (GAMA) and performed by Risk Sciences, LLC found that vent-free gas products do not generate enough humidity levels to foster mold growth. In the study, gas products were left on for twice as long as they were normally used according to a previous customer survey. Encapsulation is sometimes relied upon as a crutch and to compensate for a poor or rushed mold removal job.

Our bodies consist of a constant struggle between mold and bacteria. This struggle is normal and we are supposed to have a certain level of mold and a certain level of mold-fighting bacteria that balance each other out. Antibiotics can disturb this balance, allowing mold to gain the upper hand.

Mold Costs BOE Millions

May 7, 2009

8,000 gallons of water, 280 workers on administration leave, and $29 million. Rather than proactively trying to solve the problem, BOE has taken a reactive stance by throwing money at each incident as they occur. There are “air scrubbers” to clean particulates out of the air, and dehumidifiers pumping hot air into the walls to dry out any water that seeped in. Meanwhile, they are conducting “air tests” just to be sure which floors have mold and which floors do not.
